Description: Lost wax cast bronze vessel inspired by the Pentaradial symmetry of the Sea urchin. Molded from my earlier ceramic work, then cast in wax to alter through piercing and texture. The final wax is then cast into bronze. Patinated finish.

Bio

Alanna graduated from The Craft School with a diploma in clay in 1978. She spent the following 43 years expanding her range of materials, gathering new skills to include metal sculpture, wood carving, mold making and printmaking. One of New Brunswick’s most diverse artist, she has made her mark , both on her community of St. Andrews and through private collections across Canada, throughout the US, and in Thailand, Australia, France and Hong Kong.

Her Sea Urchin series brings her past as a potter into her current focus as a metalsmith through lost wax cast bronze.

 Artist Statement

 After having abandoned ceramics many years ago and pursuing reclaimed metal sculpture, there is a resurfacing. Older ceramic work that sat quietly waiting has been whispering to me. Their elegant forms have been calling. Their impression has spawning my new series. Cast into wax, pierced, at first gently, then with increasing confidence as this new material spoke its strengths. Deconstruction to be replaced with bronze. Interiors exposed, air and light allowed through, shadows cast. Patterning based on the holes and bumps found on sea urchins. Fragments of my older work, mimicking the shards left by the tide on my shore.

Alanna Baird a obtenu un diplôme en poterie (argile) de l’École d’art et de design du Nouveau-Brunswick en 1978. Elle a passé les 43 années suivantes à étendre son éventail de médiums, à acquérir de nouvelles compétences pour inclure la sculpture sur métal ou l’orfèvrerie, la sculpture sur bois, la fabrication de moules et la gravure. L’une des artistes les plus polyvalentes du Nouveau-Brunswick, Alanna Baird a laissé sa marque, tant dans sa communauté de St. Andrews que dans des collections privées au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Thaïlande, en Australie, en France et à Hong Kong.

 Sa série Sea Urchin fait le lien entre son passé de potière et son intérêt actuel pour le moulage de bronze à la cire perdue.

 Démarche de l’artiste

 Après avoir abandonné la céramique il y a de nombreuses années pour me consacrer à la sculpture sur du métal récupéré, j’ai en quelque sorte refait surface. Des œuvres en céramique plus anciennes qui attendaient tranquillement m’ont parlé. Leurs formes élégantes m’ont interpellée. C’est leur empreinte qui a donné naissance à ma nouvelle série. Les œuvres ont été coulées dans la cire, percées, d’abord doucement, puis avec de plus en plus de conviction à mesure que le nouveau matériau révélait ses forces. La déconstruction a cédé la place au bronze. Les intérieurs ont ainsi été exposés, l’air et la lumière ont pu filtrer et des ombres ont été créées. Les motifs s’inspirent des trous et des aspérités que l’on trouve sur les oursins. Ils évoquent des vestiges de mon travail plus ancien, imitant les fragments rejetés par la marée sur mon rivage.
